ZonedIn: The Skateboarding App We've All Been Waiting For.

ZonedIn and I have a convoluted past. I feel terrible that it's taken me this long to write about, and rave about, this amazing app. I first heard about them through Aaron from the Sk8 O' Clock podcast at a skate event in Dallas. Over a couple of beers, Aaron told me all about it and I instantly had to download it. Shortly after, I got in contact with them via Twitter. We played a little phone tag and email tag, but finally connected. Without further ado, let's talk about what ZonedIn is and how it got started.

Zoned In is an iOS and Android based Skateboarding app that teaches you how to skateboard, as well as feature your skills to an entire skateboarding audience. Essentially, it's like playing a video game in real life where you have to record yourself completing challenges. Some of these challenges are set in the game at different skill levels and others are contests put on by big companies like Element.

I got to talk with Brad from Zoned In to find out a little more about how the app got its start and what him and his closest friends inspiration was behind it all.

I grew up skateboarding in a small beach town up in Canada and my buddies and I lacked the connection and exposure to ever make it out of our town regardless of our talent. We made ZonedIn to disrupt that, giving every skater in the world the fundamental path, the connection and exposure needed to progress to a professional level if they put the work in. Also as most of us were back in the day, I was also addicted to the THPS series and always dreamed of making a real life version Tony Hawk Pro Skater as the game gives you the fundamental path to becoming a pro, a path that is still not clearly laid out in the industry today.

Having an idea for something like this is one thing, but how did Brad actually turn his idea into a reality?

It took over 2 years to align the right team and funding needed to get off the ground. We started with the initial Iphone app in February and saw great traction with over 500 skaters in 32 countries signing up in the first month. We then secured further investment to develop the full platform out for ZonedIn including: Android, Iphone, Desktop and a new In Game Marketing platform that allows brands, camps, instructors, pros, and skate shops the ability to make there own games in our app in real time. We have since grown to over 4000 skaters in 72 countries and have partnered with some key influencers on the West Coast to make the brand/camp partnerships needed to go viral.

One of the most important questions to me, as a skateboarder/writer creating an article like this, is to ask, "What got you interested in skating?" After all, its important for a business owner to be in tune with the product they have available. With such a great app that oozes with passion, it came as no surprise to me that Brad was a true skateboarder.

I grew up skateboarding in my small beach town and so did my partners, except for the development team. As I went through college, I got a little side tracked with playing college basketball and college life in general. However after coming out of college and bringing ZonedIn to life I have gotten back on my board again and it feels good! I must say its a little different experience though as I am 6 foot 8 these days haha. I got into skateboarding around 12 after hanging out with my buddies downtown at the beach and always going in to the skate shop down there. I use to spend hours in the shop just watching the skate videos being aired on the TV at the shop.

I've been following Zoned In's progress over the past 6 months and they don't seem to be slowing down at all. My last question for Brad was about the app's future. Here's what he had to say.

We have quite an experienced team of developers at ZonedIn and are releasing some exciting new stuff soon! Some key new features being added over the next 6 months include: the release of 4 new mini games in the Z games section, a shopping cart integrated right in our app/website to redeem digital coupons earned in the app, skate spots feature, capability to play full ZonedIn game in Desktop version, GoPro integration, capability to add music to your videos.

To clarify, I interviewed Brad a few months ago, so some of the features he was talking about here are already available in the app. I recommend that you all download Zoned In from your app store right now, completely free! Just tap or click the picture below and download, log in, watch content, and more on ZonedIn.com!
