Neil Degrasse Tyson Interviews Ray Kurzweil
On a Star Talk podcast episode awhile back, N.D.T. was given a question about the future and Ray Kurzweil. On that show, he had said he really wanted to interview the futurist on a future episode. Finally, that time has arrived.
I've also been anticipating this episode, as I've read a lot about Ray Kurzweil and frankly, I think he's wrong - sort of. Of course that's my own opinion, but anyone who talks with such certainty about a time that has yet to reach us, is suspect. There are so many factors that come into play when discussing how our technology will progress, that I think as an inventor/scientist, it is a disservice to say "this will happen at this time" with absolute certainty as he does when the issue is not mathematical (Moore's Law is not a law).
I can feel the college early to mid 20 something's, who follow his work like a religion, giving me an evil eye right now, but approach it logically. Will the two worlds of technology and our human brains eventually merge? Absolutely, but there's no reason to believe that in our current society, where the human mind is (mostly) still a mystery and where large portions of the world are without our most basic technology, that we are anywhere close to Ray's "singularity". We have much bigger problems to worry about (disease/virus outbreaks, global warming, sustainable energy, civil wars, etc.)
Let's hear how the conversation played out:
